The LYCRA Company, owner of LYCRA® brand, is celebrating the 60th anniversary of LYCRA® fiber, the original spandex fiber that revolutionized the fashion industry, with a donation to the National Inventors Hall of Fame. Dr. Joseph C. Shivers, a DuPont chemist, invented today’s best-known branded fiber in the world back in 1958, and forever changed clothes and the way we wear them.

Celebrating Sixty Years of Comfort, Fit and Movement

LYCRA® fiber, the original spandex fiber that revolutionized the fashion industry, is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year. Dr. Joseph C. Shivers, Jr ., a chemist at DuPont, invented the best-known branded fiber in the world in 1958, and forever changed clothes and the way we wear them. Dr. Shivers passed away in 2014, but he is being posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame on May 3, 2018. The LYCRA Company, owner of the LYCRA® brand, has made a donation to the non-profit organization to pay tribute to the inventor of LYCRA® fiber.

The rise of e-commerce has contributed to growing concern about IP protection. The LYCRA Company commissioned LEWIS Communications, an independent communications research agency, to work with a number of media organizations to better understand the levels of IP awareness and the issues and challenges the apparel industry faces in this respect.
